Congratulations to Vanora Leigh on her very interesting article "There is nothing like a Dame" about Dame Vera Lynn (The Argus Weekend, February 23).
I well recall her visit to our theatre of war while I was serving in Burma during the Second World War.
We were extremely appreciative but concerned that a young girl singer had faced such danger travelling thousands of miles from home to visit us, "the forgotten Army".
I admired her then and, almost 60 years later, I admire her even more.
Her unstinting support for many charities is well known. Two years ago, members of the public named her Personality Of The Century. This well-deserved honour says it all.
Dame Vera's fervent patriotism and her outstanding public-spirited commitment to helping others set an example hard to follow.
Long may she continue.
