The Whitehawk estate in Brighton set an unfortunate national record when 180 car tax dodgers were caught in one day.
More than 500 were found over five days in east Brighton which is a huge number for a small area.
Residents complained at the large number of untaxed cars in the street and they were right to do so.
These cars are often stolen. Many of them are vandalised or set on fire. This can easily send an area spiralling downwards.
By fining the dodgers and getting rid of the cars, the authorities can help stop this process and improve community spirit at the same time.
There are several other areas of the city, and the rest of Sussex, where similar action would be welcome.
