A man who was found dead in his flat had moved in only a few weeks before.
The body of Lee Coombes, 25, who died of a suspected overdose, was discovered by his girlfriend at Horsgate House, Hanlye Road, Cuckfield.
Earlier that day, he had been held in police custody and was charged in connection with shoplifting alcohol at Alldays in the village.
He was due to appear in court in March.
Police at Haywards Heath have launched a full inquiry.
The death is no longer being treated as suspicious and police are awaiting the results of toxicology reports, which will be forwarded to the coroner.
Sussex Police professional standards department are satisfied Mr Coombes' death is not linked to his detention in custody.
The caretaker at Horsgate House said Mr Coombes had moved in a few weeks ago and kept himself to himself.
Horsgate House is run by New Downland Housing Association, which provides 23 self-contained flats for homeless people.
