Celebrations marked the opening of part of the new West Quay harbour development in Newhaven.
Modern fishing facilities, a fish market, walkway, cycleway and car park have been officially opened at West Quay.
The £11 million project is expected to be completed by the end of the year, when work to build 46 houses and 20 flats will be finished.
Councillor Peter Harper, chairman of Lewes District Council, cut the ribbon to mark the big day.
Plans to develop the West Quay were first considered in the early Eighties as part of plans to regenerate the town.
The majority of funding has come from the Sea Containers company, which put in £7 million.
Other funding has been secured from the Government and European sources.
Council leader Ann de Vecchi said: "This development should go a considerable way towards boosting Newhaven's economic growth and we are now looking at further plans for regenerating the West Bank area."
