The report of the court case concerning reptiles left in the dark (April 24) shows exactly what happens to exotic animals when they fall into the wrong hands.
The irony of this case is the cruelty came from a pet-shop owner and employee - the animals had not even been purchased as pets.
Snakes and lizards starving and left without ultra-violet light and heat. What hope is there for these most vulnerable of pets if people abuse them in this way?
The excuse given in court was "their finances are very bad". This excuse will not do.
There is always help at hand for animals through the necessary establishments. Anybody experiencing such problems, whether it be a pet business or a pet owner, can get help.
At the moment, the Government is reviewing the Animal Welfare Act. This may help to strengthen the protection of exotic animals.
I hope, through tougher legislation, these exotic and beautiful animals will enjoy the brightness, warmth and provision they require on a daily basis.
