Former Wimbledon boss Terry Burton wants the vacant Albion job.

Taylor quit as Seagulls boss on Monday, less than two weeks after guiding them to their second successive championship.

And Burton, sacked as Dons manager six days ago, is ready to try to give Albion a Premiership future Burton, who managed the Dons in the top flight and Division One, said: "I haven't heard anything but I'd be interested. I'm out of work and looking to get back as soon as possible. Brighton would be a challenge.

"They have had a fantastic season. It is a good club, moving in the right direction. A new stadium is in the offing and they have aspirations. They are on an exciting journey.

"I'm so pleased for them. The efforts of everybody have been rewarded with another championship. It means a lot because there is a lot of local pride.

"Expectations are high after two successive promotions. Everyone has done so well. It is a special time for them.

"I respect any club achieving what they have done but the First Division is a new challenge. They are now in a very good league.

"Being new to it, whoever takes over will need to know about the division and the other teams in it.

"The players have done very well and I'm delighted for them. But Brighton will have to look at the staff to see how they can consolidate over the next one or two years to get them ready to challenge for a Premiership place."

Former Albion assistant manager Alan Cork is keen to return as No. 1.

Cork parted company with Cardiff, where he was manager, earlier this season.

Micky Adams, Cork's boss with the Seagulls, last night backed chairman Dick Knight to get the appointment of Taylor's successor right.

Adams was replaced by the former Leicester City boss last October after moving to Filbert Street himself.

Adams, now City manager, said: "I'm sure Dick Knight will make a wise choice. I've got total faith in what he says and does."

He added: "I keep in touch with a lot of people in Brighton and I'm sorry for the club's fans at the minute."
