I read "Love at first sight still strong" about Vic and Joan Pavey (The Argus, April 17). What a super write-up of two old and good friends.
I vividly recall Joan singing at my farewell service in Trinity Church, Ship Street, Brighton. It was a Sunday evening with many students and friends from Moulsecoomb and Lower Bevendean present. Helen and I were leaving for Canada after I had served as rector of Trinity and Anglican chaplain to the Colleges of Higher and Further Education.
George was at the organ; Joan started to sing Climb Every Mountain from the west gallery and, as she came to the chorus, the whole congregation joined and sang with her. Her brilliant, pure voice was leading us all. This Easter, I "retired" again but, this time, from a church near the very mountains that became the home of Maria and the Von Trapp family following their escape from Austria. We never tire of taking visitors there and, every time, I remember Vic and that wonderful evening when Joan sang for us our last time.
Thanks for the memory, Kate, and thanks for the privilege of sharing your music with us, Joan.
