Krishna Singh struck 93 as Sussex 2nd XI fought back from being 81-5 to make 292 on the opening day of their first Championship match against Middlesex.
Middlesex lost John Maunders and Robin Weston cheaply at Uxbridge as they reached 94-2 in reply.
Singh stroked 13 boundaries off 130 balls and shared in a fine six wicket stand of 115 with Stephen Ades (51) before just missing out on his century.
Teenage opening bowler Alan Coleman had Singh caught at mid off and Coleman struck again when Ades was trapped leg before having faced 101 deliveries.
Dutch trialist Ed Schiferli enjoyed himself hugely to plunder 58 off just 56 balls and he thrashed four sixes and seven fours in 66 lively minutes at the crease.
Schiferli ensured the innings ended with a flourish and he added 48 for the ninth wicket with Paul Havell, of which Havell's contribution was only two.
Ian Jones finished with 4-68 from 20 overs and Coleman got through 14 overs to have 3-42.
Coach Mark Robinson struck an early blow when Middlesex batted by pinning Maunders in front for 24 and Weston had made 16 when he was run out by Carl Hopkinson.
Nick Compton, grandson of Middlesex and England batting legend Denis and David Holt took the hosts through to stump and Jason Lewry kept things tight by conceding just 11 runs from his 11 overs, seven of them being maidens.
