Dr Johnson said Brighton was so bleak, you'd want to hang yourself but there were no trees on which to fasten a noose.
There is still a remarkable absence of trees in many of the main streets such as Western Road in Brighton and Church Road, Hove.
Now the city council and partners Ecovert are going to spend thousands of pounds on a Green Ribbon route down these roads.
If the doctor could come back later this summer for the opening, he'd either be green with envy or it would be a good noose week.
