The Council of Mortgage Lenders has called on Chief Secretary to the Treasury Paul Boateng to increase spending on flood defences.
They want the spending to be in line with the Government's own recommendations.
Recently-published figures from the Office of National Statistics showed per cent of new homes built in England between 1997 and 2000 were in areas at risk of flooding.
