Brighton had good reason to be proud in the Seventies when it lured American Express to build its European headquarters here.
A lot has happened in the 25 years since Amex first opened its wedding cake-style building off Edward Street.
It has become the biggest private sector employer in the city and an encouragement for others to join in the growing financial services sector.
Thanks to Amex and other companies, finance is as important to the local economy as the much better-known business of conferences and tourism.
As a big employer with an international reputation, Amex immediately introduced modern workplace practices which have been widely copied by other employers.
It has also played a huge part in local community life, supporting scores of charities and encouraging its employees to do likewise.
To celebrate its silver jubilee in Brighton, the company is organising a range of special community events which will raise thousands more pounds.
When Amex arrived in Brighton, the economy was at a low ebb with rampant inflation, strikes and the decline of traditional industry.
Since then there have been several recessions followed by a general upturn in prosperity during the past decade.
Throughout the ups and downs, Amex has remained a profitable, successful and steadying influence. May it continue to prosper in Brighton for years to come.
