I read with interest Rowan Dore's feature on the Dorothy Stringer School's new sports complex (The Argus, June 4). As the mother of a pupil who has benefited enormously from the school's keen sports department, I wish it every success with this new project.
I am also a member of Keep Sussex Skating (KSS), which campaigns for better provision for all skating sports, and am on a "sounding board" formed by Sport England to decide how Sussex should be represented at Regional Sports Board level (RSB).
Plans are before Brighton and Hove City Council for an Olympic-sized multi-purpose ice arena to be at the Black Rock site. If the council prefers another developer's proposals, the last viable space for an ice arena in the city will be lost.
It is a great pity the plans for Falmer do not include any other sports provision. It would have made the proposal more acceptable to a wider number of people and would have given huge benefits to many. Indeed, KSS tried to contact the Albion when Falmer was first discussed but, despite repeated attempts, no response was received from the club.
There are so many young people in this area who would love to try some of the sports they see on television yet, as a city, we offer them no opportunity to do so.
