Janacek's first mature opera continues its revival at Glyndebourne Festival Opera with Irish soprano Orla Boylan in the title role.
It is a story about a woman, married to a weakling and imprisoned in her home with a harridan of a mother-in-law, superbly sung by Susan Bickley.
She is tempted to stray and does, with devastating and tragic results, not least for herself.
It is directed by Nikolaus Lehnoff and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Jiri Kout.
The music is lush and sweeping and the whole tragedy is brilliantly realised.
