Consumer watchdogs are warning people not to score an own goal by snapping up counterfeit goods.

Fake soccer shirts were just some of the exhibits seen by more than 1,300 people who visited a display by West Sussex trading standards department at the South of England Show.

Patrick Bligh-Cheesman, head of trading standards, said: "It is estimated that, last year alone, product counterfeiting cost UK businesses about £9 billion and 4,100 jobs because genuine goods were copied, often outside the UK, and sold more cheaply than the genuine article.

"Trading standards brings several cases each year in an attempt to reduce instances of counterfeiting in areas such as business and games software, clothing, and sports goods."

A Spot the Fake competition was organised as part of the display.

Prizes, including a genuine Umbro England football shirt, went to David Evans from near Pulborough, Charlotte Sage, from Horsham, and Susie Al-Ansey, from Crawley.
