Eastbourne's top seed Jelena Dokic was dumped out of the tournament, then sniped at Martina Navratilova.
The 19-year-old Yugoslav was furious about being made to play on Court No.1 at the expense of wild card entry Navratilova, who played on Centre Court against No.3 seed Daniela Hantuchova.
Dokic lost in three sets to world No.28 Daja Bedanova after battling back from a set down.
The result is the shock of the competition after Dokic arrived in Sussex fresh from victory in Birmingham's DFS Classic at the weekend.
She said: "I was expecting to play on Centre Court. For the No.1 seed not to play on Centre Court just because there were some ridiculous matches on Centre is something I am not happy with.
"They told me I was on Centre Court but then last night they changed it. I think it is ridiculous that I couldn't play on Centre when players who are not even seeded second were."
The switch of courts added to the frustration for Dokic who was below her best against a talented opponent who seem hungrier for victory.
Bedanova, who only earned the right to play Dokic after disposing of Elena Likhovtseva in the morning, took the first set 6-4.
Dokic bounced back to win the second 6-1 with two early breaks of serve.
Bedanova broke Dokic in the first game of the final set and although the Yugoslav broke back to make it 2-2, she proceeded to lose the next four games with alarming speed.
Bedanova clinched the match with an ace to leave Dokic dispirited but not desolate ahead of Wimbledon.
The top seed added: "She played the bigger points better, I gave them away too easily. I had chances in the first set and in the third when I broke back but on the important points I didn't play.
"I struggled serving against the wind because I knew if I didn't hit it well, it would be attacked. I had trouble with that more and a lot of the games I should have won were into the wind."
Organisers later admitted the real reason for switching Dokic from Centre to Court No.1 was that Bedanova needed to finish her first round game before meeting Dokic in a re-scheduled tie.
