Richard Montgomerie will captain Sussex for the first time against India in the day-night game at Hove today.
With Chris Adams recovering from knee surgery and James Kirtley linking-up with the England one-day squad it will be the opener's job to rally the county against the tourists in a match expected to attract a 4,000-plus crowd to the County Ground.
Montgomerie has plenty of captaincy experience, having led both Oxford University and the Combined University during his student days.
Coach Peter Moores said: "When James has been in charge of the side he has been leaning on Monty's experience and I'm sure it will be a very proud moment for him."
Montgomerie could keep the job on Wednesday for the match against Yorkshire at Arundel.
Adams had his first net in over a month yesterday. He will practice again over this weekend and hopes to do some fielding drills on Monday before a decision is taken on his fitness ahead of the Championship game against the Tykes.
Both Matt Prior and Robin Martin-Jenkins are being rested today although they will return tomorrow when Sussex travel to the Oval in the National League (1.00) for a dress rehersal for next month's C&G Trophy quarter-final.
