As one of the "Dyke dreamers" (Letters, June 22), I believe the restoration of the Dyke Railway could become a reality.
It would need to start from The Downsman, thus avoiding all the building which has covered the once almost open country from Aldrington junction but this would still mean a ride of reasonable length, especially if the line was extended right to the top of Devil's Dyke.
The Downsman is well served by the 5B bus at frequent intervals and through fares could be made available. A well-promoted railway could be a money-spinning attraction, especially if it was manned by voluntary labour. I certainly would not mind learning to drive an engine and driving a train in my spare time.
It seems the first step would be to found a Dyke Railway Society, which could then consider the options and draw up plans, arrange finance and so on.
