Julie Pullin's Wimbledon agony continued with another frustrating exit.
The British No.1 from Hove was sluuging it out with Slovakian Maja Matevzic on show court No. 13 while Martin Lee took centre stage.
She was beaten in three sets, despite taking the first 7-4 on the tie break.
Pullin seemed on course to end her horror run of seven straight first round defeats.
It all started to go wrong when fellow left-hander Matevzic broke in the opening game of the second set.
The tall clay court specialist, world ranked 57 compared to Pullin's 133, made her extra class count to run out a 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 winner.
"It was very close all the way through," Pullin said. "I got off to a bad start in the second set.
"She went for it a little more and started making a few better forehands.
"That first game really gave her a lift and unfortunately it slipped away from me.
"I am very disappointed. It was a match I felt I had a chance of winning, but I didn't play well enough. I created a few chances but couldn't take them.
"I had unbelievable support and that was lovely. It was a shame not to be able to capitalise."
Pullin will be seeking consolation in both the ladies doubles and mixed doubles.
Seventh seed Jelena Dokic struggled to beat Ukrainian qualifier Elena Tatarkova in a game which stretched past 9pm.
After winning the first set on a tie-break the Yugoslav wasted a 3-0 lead in the second set before rallying to clinch an unconvincing 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory.
Eighth seed Sandrine Testud was the first major seed to suffer a scare when she lost the first set on a tie-break to Germany's Anca Barna. But Testud recovered to win 6-7 6-4 6-1.
