Controversial plans for new flats on a garage site look set for approval by city councillors.

Southern Primary Housing and Karis Developments want to build 122 flats on the old Endeavour Garage site in Preston Road, Brighton.

It will be the first major development in the city where developers have agreed with the council's policy of having 40 per cent of schemes allocated to social housing.

The application says 49 flats would be low-cost.

At a planning meeting on Wednesday, developers will also agree to include artwork in the building and to establish a car sharing scheme for residents.

Extensive changes have taken place since the development was first submitted to take account of objections and comments from neighbours.

The height of a corner building in Springfield Road has been reduced from eight to six storeys and the building has also been set back.

There were scores of letters supporting the innovation of the scheme.

But there were also strong objections the development would be too big and would not have enough parking.

There is still concern about the building's design from the Conservation Areas Advisory Group and English Heritage.
