I hope the parent with his youngster playing golf shots at Stanmer Park at the end of the Classic Car Show on Sunday, June 23, has, at the very least, a small twinge of conscience.

The result of the youngster being allowed to play close to parked cars in front of Stanmer House was two broken car windscreens and the rapid disappearance of the man and his son from the scene before anyone noticed.

The consequence of his negligent and shifty attitude was that two people now have the trouble and substantial expense of replacing their windscreens, through no fault of their own, and their pleasant days out being thoroughly spoilt.

Far worse, of course, is that someone could so easily have been seriously hurt.

The only positive aspect of this sad story is that it should remind golfers not to practise in public parks or, if the temptation is simply too great for them, to use only safer, lightweight plastic practice balls.

The only conclusion the rest of us can draw is that while some golfers are mad about golf, others are simply mad.
