The articles on Architecture Week remind us of the wonderful legacy we have in Brighton and Hove of buildings of international repute.
But it should also remind us of our responsibility to rekindle enthusiasm for outstanding modern architecture in our city for the 21st Century.
In the same way that architects of the past reflected their own time in form and materials, so should we too.
The confidence and elegance of our squares and terraces, our Victorian churches, the boldness of Embassy Court - none was born of diffidence and modesty.
They reflected the "spirit and exuberance" of Brighton and Hove, as Piers Gough calls it, exhilaration not best served by pastiche and off-the-peg compromise.
I do not believe there was a time more appropriate to encourage and challenge architects and developers. Brighton and Hove City Council places design at the forefront of its vision for the city.
Architects and developers, please note.
