A man has been reported for careless cycling after a woman was found unconscious with severe head injuries.
Detectives spoke to a man following inquiries in the area where the woman was discovered with multiple fractures to her skull.
The woman, now identified as Georgina Amoo, 30, is still dangerously ill at the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.
A major inquiry was launched after Ms Amoo was found lying in the middle of Waterloo Street, Hove, by two taxi drivers at 3am yesterday.
Policed feared she might have been the victim of an assault and more than 30 officers were drafted in to search the area and make house-to-house inquiries.
Detective Inspector Graham Pratt said one of the people interviewed said he had overheard a cyclist mention he had been involved in a collision riding his mountain bike.
Det Insp Pratt said: "We have interviewed somebody who says he was involved in a collision with someone while he was on his pedal cycle.
"It is an unusual occurrence for someone to receive that serious an injury."
Ms Amoo is still in a critical condition in the intensive care unit.
She is from Birmingham but has been living in Brighton and Hove for some time and her last known address was in the Waterloo Street area.
