Thousands of city residents will receive letters this week informing them of a proposed new parking zone.

The scheme, if agreed, would allow residents with permits to park almost anywhere within their council ward, the only exceptions being small areas around shops where short-term pay-and-display parking would be used.

It is being proposed by Brighton and Hove City Council for the Goldsmid area of Hove.

The letters invite residents to an exhibition of the proposals, where they can make comments.

Councillor Simon Battle, council spokesman on transportation and parking, said: "It is important we hear from as many residents as possible to ensure we get the scheme right.

"People are seeing the benefits created in other areas where schemes were introduced last year."

"The new scheme gives greater priority towards residents' parking.

"Much more of the parking space will be shared permit and short-term pay- and-display bays, in direct response to comments made in the consultation last year.

"There will be some long-term parking spaces that can be used by residents or commuters working in the area. We would like to hear their views as well."

The exhibition is being held at St Mary and St Abraham Coptic Orthodox Church, Davigdor Road, Hove, from July 9 to July 19.

It is open between 9am and 1pm Monday to Saturday and 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday.

Residents with mobility problems will be able to view the proposal in the main foyer of Hove Town Hall, Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm from July 9 to July 19.

A previous scheme proposed for the area was opposed by residents, who sent petitions to the council.

Comment forms can be completed at the church or the town hall or people can send send their views to Steve Nichols, senior project manager, at PO Box 2500, Kings House, Grand Avenue, Hove, or email steve.nichols@brighton-hove.gov.uk
