I was very interested to read how Councillor Chris Morley has swapped his smart suit to go out cleaning the streets (The Argus, July 2).
Brighton doesn't just need cleaning outside the Town Hall though, does it? Brighton and Hove's street cleaners do a vital job and are some of the city's unsung heroes, says Coun Morley. Well, good for you, sir, and about time somebody said it out loud too. However, what about when the refuse cleaners had to strike to keep their jobs not so very long ago? Nobody said they were heroes then, did they? And how about the shambles the highway department now finds itself in? Which councillor is going out mending holes in the roads?
Also, how about asking Brighton and Hove City Council what will happen to the roads now a new contractor has been appointed? And how about the fact they are going to be allowed by this new contract to use illegal sites for fly-tipping? What about all the current employees who understood they would be part of the transfer from Ecovert and now find themselves being forced out of work by the newly appointed contractor?
What next, I wonder? Perhaps parks and gardens will also go out to tender but who does the council have in mind for that? Is that another closely-guarded secret?
I await to see one of the councillors out mending holes in the road. However, I am very sure that will not be kept a closely-guarded secret but will make front-page news - the council likes to paint itself to be caring for the community as it has been until now.
Do us all a favour, councillors. Stay in your suits and do your jobs (at least you are lucky enough to have one) properly and with trust and self-respect. You don't know how to clean the streets properly or to mend the roads so leave it to the people who do - the unsung heroes.
