Passenger growth at low-cost partners easyJet and Go continued unabated last month as 1.5 million people flew with the airlines.

EasyJet carried 958,857 passengers in June, an increase of 51.5 per cent on a year ago and six per cent ahead of May.

Go's recent expansion into East Midlands airport helped its passenger count hit 550,749, an increase of 71.8 per cent.

easyJet bought Go for £374 million in May in a deal which saw its rival's chief executive Barbara Cassani pocket almost £10 million.

The takeover will form Europe's largest budget airline, leapfrogging Irish operator Ryanair into top spot.

Ms Cassani, who is leaving Go, said the airline's figures reflected the massive success of its new bases at East Midlands and Bristol.

The percentage of seats booked on each flight made by easyJet and Go also improved last month.
