A Sussex pub has been named the prettiest in the South of England.

The Half Moon Inn at Kirdford, near Billingshurst, was singled out for its style and beauty.

The award was made by The Green Organisation as part of the Green Apple Environment Awards campaign.

The competition was launched to commemorate the Queen's Golden Jubilee and recognise establishments which safeguard architectural heritage.

The rose-covered 16th Century pub is owned by Patrick and Francesca Burfield.

Mr Burfield said they were delighted to have won and added: "We have tried very hard to mix the beautiful location with delicious food and good, friendly service."

The pub, which specialises in serving a "great British menu with a twist", has also recently been given a Les Routiers Shield and a nomination from Johansens' top hotels guide.

It beat off competition from hundreds of other pubs and bars to secure the title.

A Green Organisation spokesman said: "The jubilee was an opportunity to pay tribute to the role played by pubs in helping to preserve and promote some of Britain's better public buildings."
