Need somewhere to chill out? Then a proposed development in Brighton could be the place for you.

An open-air ice rink is being planned for Octagon Square at the marina as part of Brighton and Hove's where else campaign to become European City of Culture 2008.

Organisers want to create a winter festival in the city and also hope to revive the Burning of the Clocks event, which had to be cancelled in 2001 because of funding difficulties.

Other activities would include city centre events, shopping promotions and extra Christmas lights.

However, Brighton and Hove City Council needs to secure private funding to make the festival a reality.

Councillor Jackie Lythell, chair of the where else executive, said: "Again, it is all about unlocking private funds to pay for the public to enjoy themselves.

"A winter festival would have huge benefits in a place like Brighton. As well as cheering up the winter months, it would help all sorts of businesses, everyone from restaurants to printers. An ice rink would be really popular family entertainment."

Brighton Marina marketing manager Kirsty Harris, said: "Skating is already established as a big part of marina events and the concept of bringing real ice to the city is a really exciting prospect."

It is hoped charges for the skating would be kept low.

A spokesman for the city council said talks about sponsorship were ongoing.

He said: "We are still twisting arms but we would hope to be able to make an announcement in the next few weeks."
