I was astounded to learn that new building regulations are forcing firms and traders to pay new charges in order to be allowed to install windows, conservatories, rooflights, roof windows and doors. This undoubtedly will mean consumers end up paying.
New regulations apparently came in on April 1, 2002, and although Conservatives in the House of Commons opposed this on June 18, Labour used its majority to push them through.
The measures discriminate against anybody undertaking DIY.
No longer will he or she be able to replace doors and windows without obtaining expensive and time-consuming permission.
Conservatives support measures to improve energy efficiency and, particularly, standards in conservation areas but these regulations could lead to cowboy builders who ignore rules and regulations and who will have a field day.
Another tax by the back door?
