A former Albion junior footballer suffered head and leg injuries in a road smash.

Stuart Corlett, due to start training with Sussex county league Ringmer tonight, was on his way to work as a postman when his moped was involved in a collision with a taxi.

The 31-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

He received stitches to a head wound but none of his injuries was serious.

Mr Corlett, married and living in Coldean, Brighton, sent a message to Ringmer manager Glen Geard to say he would have to miss training.

Mr Geard said: "That's typical of the lad - committed and honest. We're all very relieved he suffered nothing too serious."

His uncle, Tom Hamilton, said: "Tests thankfully showed nothing was broken."

Mr Corlett moved from the Albion to Bognor and later signed as an apprentice with Crystal Palace.

He played for Newhaven and Saltdean United before moving to county division one Ringmer.

Police made an appeal for witnesses to the crash in Coldean Lane, Brighton, yesterday at 4am.
