Any computer connected to the internet with a permanently live link is a prime target for hackers.

WatchGuard Technologies have developed a broadband hardware firewall, the SOHO/tc, that can be used to protect up to ten computers sharing a single broadband connection.

The unit is upgradeable to 50 computers which can exchange email and files and to share a broadband internet connection, printers, data drives and peripherals.

Installation is described as plug-and-play but I found this unit needed some technical input to achieve results with a static internet protocol (IP) setup while dynamic IP addresses configured straight away.

The installation package is browser-based and, providing all the required information is to hand, set up can be accomplished very quickly.

The unit supports virtual private networks (VPNs) so private encrypted communications can be transmitted. A VPN automatically encrypts messages so they are safe from prying eyes but can be opened by authorised users.

The WatchGuard SOHO/tc is very suitable for small businesses but works equally well on a private stand-alone machine equipped with a 10baseT network card. But it may be a bit too pricey for a single user.
