Harlands believe they are in a class of their own. The primary school bid for a national softball final place tomorrow after sweeping to a Sussex title hat-trick.

Coach Glyn Turner said: "I think it all proves we are the best junior school for cricket in the county."

Harlands have won the Sussex eight-a-side hardball and softball primary school crowns, with a triumph in the West Sussex six-a-side tournament at Arundel completing a triple treat for the kids.

Turner has already guided the school to two national runners-up softball spots.

He said: "I haven't got a cricket background but it seems we can produce teams year after year that do well. I think it must be down to a lot of practice and the fact we have been fortunate to have talented youngsters coming through.

"Just look at the two female players we have, Lucy Coombs and Pippa Dagger. They are great assets as they bowl very straight."

Harlands have won all 28 matches played this season with captain Joe Hallam bowling fast and accurately. Leg-spinner Joe Newsome has put in some fine performances.

The Haywards Heath school compete in the South East Region finals of the softball competition, which is part of the Sports Relief charity campaign, at East Grinstead tomorrow hoping to secure a national date at Trent Bridge.

Turner said: "We are confident. We've worked on attack and playing attractive strokes this year.

"Our fielding is hot and we haven't dropped a catch.

"Having made it through to the national section twice to finish second, we aim to make it third time lucky in Nottingham should we get through."
