Once again, Tom Bromley rushes to the defence of animal research (Letters, July 5).
Drugs tested on animals often have serious side-effects on humans. How much money is made by the pharmaceutical companies at the expense of animal suffering?
Perhaps Mr Bromley would enlighten us as to the cures brought about by animal research?
The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research is forging ahead with alternative methods to animal testing.
This year, the diverse research programme has encompassed humane research into liver disease, cancer, brain damage, skin allergy, drug testing, cataracts, lung disease, kidney failure and ageing.
The trust is encouraging the training of young scientists in non-animal research techniques by providing funding for PhD studentships.
The students have set a shining example to the research community by prize-winning work of the highest scientific and ethical standards.
Surely these young people are worthy of recognition by the Government for their work in alternative research?
I am sure many more young people would study medical science if they knew animals would not have to suffer.
