The Sussex Table Tennis Association's annual general meeting will be on Sunday at Hurstpierpoint without a chairman.
Following the surprise announcement that the present chairman, Trevor Wiramanaden (East Grinstead), would not stand again, county officials have failed to find anyone to nominate for the key post.
The main reason for Wiramanaden quitting is still unclear and he will not attend the meeting.
County secretary Alan Beames, Patcham, said: "There is just a faint possibility that a former chairman may return to the chair for one year.
"But we shall not know whether that will happen until nominations are made. "Meanwhile, I am expecting the president, Bill Goldfinch, to take charge until we come to the crucial point of nominations for the chair."
Wiramanaden has indicated that he will carry on as veterans' secretary after saying he would resign the post when announcing his decision to stand down as chairman.
Wiramanaden attended the annual meeting of the County Championships in Birmingham representing Sussex three weeks ago.
