Scaffolding manager David Winder was killed when a car pulled out in front of him as he drove to work, a court heard.

His blue Ford Fiesta was hit by a purple Fiesta driven by Ashley Jones, who has denied causing Mr Winder's death by dangerous driving.

Mr Winder was driving from his home in Peacehaven to Eastbourne when the head-on crash happened on the A259 at Friston, last September.

Jones, who was on his way to work in Brighton at 7am, and the front seat passenger in Mr Winder's car were both seriously injured and needed hospital treatment.

Stephen Shay, prosecuting, said a grey Vauxhall Cavalier had overtaken a number of vehicles between Eastbourne and the crash scene.

Hove Crown Court heard how it overtook a lorry and pulled in front of it sharply to avoid a collision with Mr Winder's car, travelling in the opposite direction.

Witnesses said Jones, 33, of Annes Road, Eastbourne, who was travelling in a string of cars behind the lorry, had pulled out at the same time to overtake a maroon Fiesta.

The court heard Mr Winder, 55, swerved but was unable to avoid a collision with Jones' car.

Double glazing fitter Donald Shearer stopped his van after the crash to see if he could help the victims.

Wilfred Orange, driver of the maroon Fiesta, said: "The Cavalier got past the lorry, but only just. He did not seem to have seen the car coming the other way. The next thing I knew, the car behind me had pulled out and was overtaking very fast.

"It pulled alongside me and I thought he was not going to make it and then the crash happened."

The trial continues.
