Amazing game, cricket. It either runs with you or against you. Success never comes without hard work and fortune always favours the brave.

So if you were wondering how we will tackle the next four weeks then rest assured, it will be with a positive approach and an embracing of hard work.

Understand one thing, if the game is treating you rough, then don't expect miracle cures, especially ones that come in fancy little packets, get yourself back on that horse and just try a little harder not to fall off it.

Sometimes though, to be successful at some stage you will require a little luck. Not that is something that has been in short supply this season.

We have had three rain interrupted championship matches when victory looked either a distinct possibility or inevitable.

As a result of this quantity of rain, wickets have certainly favoured the ball, especially recently when it seems that summer stoically refuses to show itself.

Runs seem in short supply all around the circuit. Maybe both the English summer and the batsmen are saving themselves for a mighty finish to the season. Fingers crossed.

To make matters that much worse we have also had our fill of injuries this far. Most significantly the injuries have occurred to key players to the side.

Paul Hutchison's injury, which has kept him out for much of the season, has cost us dearly. With James Kirtley's freak accident while away on England duty putting him out for six weeks, we need to keep our bowling attack as fresh as possible.

With our bowlers stretched to the limit at the moment, Paul's availability would have been a godsend. Let's hope the next week brings good news on his fitness.

My own injury came at the worst possible time both for the team and myself. Just before our B&H Quarter Final against Warwickshire, and in the form of my life, I could not have chosen a more inappropriate time.

My own return came perhaps too early because of injury to Tony Cottey and I can tell you life has certainly been tougher since, both dealing with the post-op pain and desperately trying to recapture the form which I had been in.

Still, after spending so long out it is just a pleasure to be back out in the middle again.

It is not all doom and gloom though. While the Championship is hotting up we know that one win will put is the top three so there is everything to fight for at the moment. Next Wednesday sees us entertain Surrey in the C&G quarter-final, our fifth quarter-final in five years.

It would be fantastic to turn over Surrey, with their entourage of Test cricketers. They must surely be favourites but I believe very much that the game could be our launch pad for a terrific run in.

We must take a lot from our early season B&H form and know that our poor form in the NUL will surely change soon. With a host of floodlit cricket at Hove ahead, there is still a lot to play for and of course look forward to.

Whilst we all dream of winning the C&G and all that Lord's brings, it is the Championship which will provide the stiffest test between now and the end of the season. With the lads already looking tired from the hectic schedule there is no respite for us with every point vital to our challenge.

With the next three weeks including a quarter-final and away matches with Somerset and Warwickshire, two teams in similar situations to us, our season could well and truly be decided.

Let us hope that it is for the good and remember: Fortune favours the brave!
