Lewes Prison has big problems with severe overcrowding and a supply of drugs getting through to those inside.
New governor Paul Carroll is determined to tackle these difficulties but some of his ideas have not proved popular.
The strongest objections have been over changes to visiting arrangements but Mr Carroll has made his intentions clear.
Some of the visitors are not there to offer solace to the prisoners. They offer them drugs instead.
Mr Carroll is right to take a tough line on this because any jail must be drug free. He is now well on the way to achieving this.
In the long term, this outdated jail must be rebuilt. Until then, it will need a hard but humane regime to make it work.
