An old Bailey jury trying property tycoon Nicholas Hoogstraten on a charge of murder was yesterday sent home for a second night without returning any verdicts.

The six men and six women will return to court on Monday to continue their deliberations.

Mr Justice Newman repeated it was important jury members should not discuss the case with anyone after they left court, or let anyone speak to them about it.

A charge of conspiracy to murder against Hoogstraten was dropped on Wednesday when the judge started his summing up of the case.

The judge has told jurors they would now only have to consider a single charge against Hoogstraten, which alleges that the multi-millionaire murdered retired businessman Mohammed Raja.

Mr Raja was stabbed and shot at point-blank range at his home in Sutton, south London, on July 2, 1999.

The prosecution alleges Hoogstraten hired two hit-men - Robert Knapp and David Croke - to murder Mr Raja after he fell out with him over a number of property deals.

Mr Raja was taking civil court proceedings against Hoogstraten at the time, which were alleging fraud, the jury has heard.

Hoogstraten, 57, of Framfield, near Uckfield; Croke, 59, of Bolney Road, Moulsecoomb, Brighton; and Knapp, 55, of County Limerick, Ireland, all deny murder.
