A brain-damaged fund-raiser collecting cash for charity was targeted by thieves as he suffered an epileptic fit.

Michael Owen, 55, had raised £30 for local youths at Littlehampton Carnival on Saturday when he began fitting.

He fell to the floor, dropping the bucket containing the cash, and remained unconscious for several seconds.

When he came round he saw two teenage boys running away from Southfields Recreation Ground with the bucket.

Mr Owen, from Helyers Green in Wick, Littlehampton, was disgusted by their behaviour but has vowed to carry on collecting. He has even promised to replace the money.

He said: "I was having a fit and they got hold of the bucket, smashed the lid and took the money.

"I was on the floor and I saw them running off. I was scared. I called the police.

"I think they're very nasty to have done this but I will carry on collecting donations. I always help every year and this is the first time I've had a fit while I was doing it.

"I think I must have been a bit stressed from marching round all day."

Although the only income he receives is disability allowance, Mr Owen said he will try to replace what was stolen.

Mr Owen, who lives in sheltered accommodation, has suffered from epilepsy and brain damage since being attacked in the Sixties.

Carnival president Freda Hughes said: "It's very upsetting. I'm glad he's okay."

The two thieves were in their mid to late teens with short hair.

Carnival chief marshal Ivor Holland has an epileptic daughter and knows the dangers of having a fit.

He said: "I am extremely upset about this and hope this hasn't caused Mr Owen too much stress. The committee is very deeply saddened."
