A campaign has been launched to make Brighton and Hove the capital of tea.

Fans of the traditional cuppa joined restaurant managers and staff to call for a return to the afternoon tea break.

Carrying placards and handing out leaflets, they demanded: "Bring back afternoon tea."

The campaign has been spearheaded by the Duke Street branch of Browns in Brighton.

The restaurant has revived the afternoon tea institution, serving a selection of cakes and scones with a range of teas at the traditional time of 3pm.

Manager Julia Clark said: "The tradition of afternoon tea is seen as something quintessentially English but it is actually dying out in this country.

"Everyone is so busy that few people take time out for the break.

"But we don't want to see something that used to be so English failing the test of time.

"With a resurgence of national pride following the jubilee and the World Cup, this is the perfect time to revive afternoon tea as an institution."
