I am glad to hear Alan Nunn is not "anti-European" considering our country is in Europe and he is therefore, by definition, a European whether he likes it or not (Letters, July 11).
Although I share Mr Nunn's anti-fascist sentiments, my take on history is very different from his.
Empire-building is not an exclusively Germanic pre-occupation - "an unfortunate desire to dominate".
Empires come and go, rise and fall. The United States is playing god at the moment, we did once as the British Empire, as did France, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Greece and so on.
Disturbingly, what we learn about history is that we learn nothing from history.
