Campaigners are awaiting a report on the future of a vital breast cancer unit.

The report, expected to be published this week, will suggest whether outline planning permission should be granted for a building to replace the Nigel Porter Unit for Breast Care, currently based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

Two planning applications for the building of a breast cancer unit at the Princess Royal Hospital site in Haywards Heath will be considered by the full Mid Sussex District Council on Wednesday.

Officers from the district council's planning department are finishing reports into the applications.

Tim Barkley, deputy director of the environment at the district council, said: "The reports will be made public before the full council meets on Wednesday."

Planning officers advised the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust to submit two bids for outline planning permission for the Princess Royal site.

One application is for a taller but thinner building, the second application is for a shorter and wider building.

The trust announced plans to move the unit away from the Royal Sussex last year.

The plan sparked outrage and more than 30,000 people signed The Argus's petition demanding a site be found in Brighton.

Campaigners suggested Rosaz House, opposite the oncology unit at the Royal Sussex.

The trust submitted an outline planning application to Brighton and Hove City Council for a new unit on that site and outline permission was granted on July 3.

Once the district council decides about the two applications, health chiefs will choose between Brighton and Haywards Heath.
