Martin Hinshelwood has the nasty streak needed to be a success in charge of Albion.

That is the verdict of midfielder Charlie Oatway as he looks ahead to the Seagulls' second pre-season run out tonight.

Boss Hinshelwood is likely to take 22 players and give them 45 minutes apiece at Ryman League outfit Sutton (7.30).

They will be keen to build on the promise shown in Tuesday's 4-1 win at Worthing, Hinshelwood's first game since taking charge on Monday.

The former youth team chief is widely regarded as one of the most easy going characters on the circuit but Oatway revealed: "He has got that mean streak in him and every manager needs that.

"He has got the respect of the players already.

"He is someone we know and who knows what he is going into.

"He will have a laugh and joke but he has definitely got that fear factor that all managers need."

Oatway insists Albion lost nothing in waiting until this week to make their new appointment as the players got their serious stamina work out of the way.

He said: "For the first two weeks of pre-season all you are doing is running anyway.

"You don't really need a manager to do that. The coaching staff do it You can get anyone off the street to do it.

"The boys don't really see too much of each other for ten weeks in the summer so we haven't had that much time to stew over it among each other "It has been very interesting to be honest and the boys are really wanting to crack on with the season.

"The more pre-season games you play the better. It means less time running round tracks so I am happy with that.

"All they want us to do is get 45 minutes out of each game so you are getting a certain amount of fitness so long as you put the effort in.

"If you don't put it in you will be running in midweek as well."

Seagulls club captain Paul Rogers returns to the club he memorably helped dump Coventry out of the FA Cup in 1989 in tonight's game.

Sutton, who include former Albion utility man Ryan Palmer in their ranks, opened pre-season with a 4-0 home defeat by Micky Adams' full Leicester City first team squad.
