Brighton's Royal Pavilion libraries and museums have been awarded a £135,000 grant.
Culture minister Baroness Blackstone said the cash would be used to improve access to the non-Western and decorative art collections.
It will also pay for improved storage and an audit of the existing works of art held at the city locations.
Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, in Chichester, also won a grant from the latest round of the Government's Designated Museum Challenge Fund.
Museum bosses will be given £10,000 to boost the "visitor experience" with additional information.
To win funding, they had to prove they wanted to improve access to their collections.
Across the UK, £5.2 million was shared by 49 non-national museums and galleries yesterday.
Baroness Blackstone said: "Our museums are among the best to be found in the world.
"We are right to be proud of them, and right to do everything we can to make them as open and accessible as possible.
"These grants will benefit those museums who have put forward imaginative and innovative schemes to boost access."
