Rick Lemmon's hopes of winning the VSR Sport Challenge took a major blow at Donington Park last weekend.
The Hailsham driver had been joint second in the series with Mike Doble and, with championship leader Steve Dance not doing all the remaining rounds, he had a genuine chance of glory.
However, mechanical problems hit Lemmon hard and he could finish only eighth in the championship race.
Dance won the race and Doble finished third, which moved both men clear of the Sussex driver.
There are still six rounds left but Lemmon said: "The only chance of me winning now is if my main competitor Mike Doble has a disaster like I have just done.
"He is 100 points ahead of me which means I have got to win the next race and he must fail to finish for me to overtake him. It is not dead yet but this has made it more of a struggle."
