I was incensed to see a report on television about The Argus photographer who is expecting to escape his parking fine because of a technicality.

This "technicality" is because the warden allegedly wasn't wearing his hat when the ticket was issued. What an absurd reason for trying to avoid payment.

Some people seem more concerned about an apparent bylaw dating from the 1800s which makes the absence of a hat deemed to be improper dress. Come on, let's be realistic, this is an old and obscure law that was not intended to cover 21st-Century parking enforcement.

Quite simply, the culprit had parked in a restricted zone and had properly been ticketed. Why doesn't he (or perhaps The Argus) pay the fine like any normal law-abiding citizen without whingeing about it?

He seems to forget the council and, indirectly, the residents of Brighton and Hove will have to meet any costs of court action.

I have been driving for more than 30 years and have only received one parking ticket in all that time and that was entirely my fault so I paid up without question.

So let's not dwell on such trivia- there are far more important things on which to report.
