Celebrations have been held to mark the 100th anniversary of the East Hill lift in Hastings.
The lift, which transports people up the cliff face to the summit, was opened in 1902 by the town's MP.
The lift, the steepest of its kind in England, attracts 150,000 people every year who travel 265m of track to the top.
It generates about £100,000 a year from fares, which stand at 90p for an adult return ticket and 50p for children, pensioners and students.
Lift supervisor Simon Marshall said the lift maintained a quiet existence with the biggest shake-up happening in 1973 when power was switched from water to electricity.
Five people are employed to operate the two carts.
