Vodafone has said it would not launch third generation (3G) mobile phones in the UK this year but denied delaying the roll-out.

It is planning to trial the majority of its 3G services - the next generation of mobiles which allow internet access and other services - this year with a commercial launch next year. It said the only place it would launch the phones this year would be in Japan.

However, Vodafone denied newspaper reports saying there had been a delay.

A spokeswoman said: "We always said we would be trialing the majority of 3G this year with commercial launch in 2003. Nothing has changed. In the UK, we have always said commercial launch would be next year.
