Unemployment in Brighton and Hove is more than double the average for the South-East.
The number of people out of work and claiming benefit in the city stood at 4,994 last month, 3.7 per cent of the workforce.
In Sussex, only Hastings, with 4.5 per cent, was higher, according to the July figures.
In East Sussex as a whole, 2.4 per cent of the workforce was out of work and claiming benefit, while in West Sussex the figure stood at 1.2 per cent.
The South-East average was 1.7 per cent, while in the United Kingdom it was 3.1 per cent.
