A schoolboy who is going blind because of a brain tumour will now be able to go on the holiday of his dreams thanks to readers of The Argus.
Jordan Powell is slowly losing his sight and mobility because of an inoperable brain tumour.
His parents Anne and Colin vowed to take him on a trip to Disney World in Florida so he could meet his cartoon character heroes before he went blind.
But the family, of St Nicholas Road, Portslade, could not afford the trip alone.
Friends and neighbours have helped with fund-raising efforts - but it was a story in The Argus that made the money flow in to eight-year-old Jordan's Mickey Mouse Appeal.
Cheques from £5 to £500 flooded into the office, raising a total of almost £1,400.
Colin estimates the trip will cost about £3,500 but he said the money already raised had made all the difference to it going ahead.
Jordan, who has five brothers and sisters, said it was "brilliant" so much money had been raised.
He has already gathered a collection of holiday brochures and has started working out where he wants the family to stay and what rides he would like to go on.
Anne said: "Jordan is getting more eager as time goes on. He is in his element."
Colin said he was deeply touched by the generosity of Argus readers. "It was such a surprise that so many people responded. It was great, just fantastic. My wife and I are so grateful.
"There aren't enough words to say thank you properly. It will make all the difference to us."
Doctors have recently warned the family Jordan's growth has been affected by radiotherapy so they are hoping to jet off before any new treatment begins.
Anne said: "With a child like Jordan, taking him out of the country is like transporting the crown jewels. He has to have his own insurance and certificates from doctors saying he is okay to go. We would like to take the trip as soon as possible, probably in April or June next year."
Other fund-raising efforts are also helping to bring in money for the appeal. Elvis impersonator Ivor Potter will be performing as Suspiciously Elvis at the American Express club on October 12.
Jordan, a big Elvis fan, is looking forward to the concert almost as much as the trip to Disney World. According to Anne: "Jordan loves Elvis. He is besotted by the bloke."
Any money left over from the ongoing fund-raising efforts will be donated to the Royal Marsden Hospital cancer unit, where Jordan was first treated at the age of six.
For tickets to the concert, which will also include a Marilyn Monroe lookalike and other performers, call Dick Claridge on 01273 275753.
