Holidaymakers in Sussex are being charged higher amounts for exchanging money compared to other cities.
FX Currency Services carried out a mystery shopper exercise to establish the difference in the cost of buying travel money across the country.
The results showed American Express (Amex) charged customers in Brighton on Tuesday £2.91 more for buying $700 US dollars than in London.
On the same day Lunn Poly customers were charged £470.74 in Brighton to buy 700 euros, compared to £470.43 in Manchester.
Jackie Goodzee, public affairs manager at Amex, said: "Our advice is to shop around. That's why we have a flexible policy.
"The managers in our different branches can change the rate of exchange to compete with other local bureaux de change.
"We operate within mini markets. Today it might cost more to buy dollars in Brighton than London but tomorrow it could be the other way round."
Lunn Poly public relations manager Kimberley Kay said: "We normally do have standard rates throughout the UK but in some cases there may be special offers set up in certain branches to compete with local competitors."
